Background of the Study
Household waste management practices are crucial for environmental sustainability, particularly in urban areas experiencing rapid population growth (Adeyemi, 2023). In Owerri Municipal, inefficient waste management has led to environmental degradation, including soil and water pollution, and increased public health risks (Chukwu, 2023). This study investigates the various waste management practices adopted by households, including recycling, composting, and proper disposal methods. It critically analyzes how these practices influence environmental sustainability by reducing landfill waste and promoting resource recovery (Ibrahim, 2024). The research further explores the role of public awareness, government policies, and community initiatives in enhancing household waste management. Through a comprehensive evaluation, the study aims to propose strategies that improve waste management and foster sustainable environmental practices (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Owerri Municipal faces significant environmental challenges due to ineffective household waste management practices, leading to pollution and unsustainable waste accumulation (Ibrahim, 2024). The absence of efficient waste disposal systems and low community participation in recycling initiatives exacerbate the problem, negatively impacting environmental sustainability (Chukwu, 2023). This study aims to address the gaps in current waste management practices, evaluate their environmental impacts, and propose interventions to enhance sustainability and public health outcomes (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the current household waste management practices.
2. To evaluate the impact of these practices on environmental sustainability.
3. To recommend strategies for improving waste management in Owerri.
Research Questions:
1. What are the existing household waste management practices in Owerri?
2. How do these practices affect environmental sustainability?
3. What improvements can be made to enhance waste management effectiveness?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Effective household waste management improves environmental sustainability.
2. Inadequate waste disposal practices correlate with increased environmental degradation.
3. Enhanced public awareness leads to better waste management outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study examines the impact of household waste management practices on environmental sustainability in Owerri, providing critical insights for policymakers and community stakeholders. The findings aim to promote sustainable waste management strategies that protect the environment and improve public health (Ibrahim, 2024; Chukwu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing household waste management practices and their impact on environmental sustainability in Owerri Municipal, Imo State.
Definitions of Terms:
1. Household Waste: Residual waste generated from domestic activities.
2. Waste Management: The process of handling and disposing of waste.
3. Environmental Sustainability: The capacity to maintain ecological balance over time.
